O Convento in Olhão - architect Filipe Monteiro

O Convento is a charming B&B that is hidden on no. 10 of the narrow street Travessa António Bento in the coastal town of Olhão, close to the boulevard and the market halls. The exterior of the building is quite discrete, making the impressive interior all the more surprising. Upon entering, you will be welcomed by an attractive courtyard featuring columned galleries, atmospheric tiled floors, and a central fountain

The building extends over two floors and has an open-air feel, which allows the space to be closed off in winter. The architecture and tranquil ambiance evoke memories of a monastery, but the history is different: the former building once served as a dormitory for women who worked in the canning industry. During the renovation, by architect Filipe Monteiro, the exterior wall was largely retained, while the interior has been carefully converted. A large part of the existing building materials were reused during the renovation.

The courtyard, inspired by Moorish style, is characteristic of the old city of Olhão. The former dormitories have now been transformed into spacious and comfortable guest rooms, offering a generous floor area and high ceilings. The rooms are mainly furnished in white tones and feature antique furniture and marble bathrooms. The two rooms on the second floor are accessible via a narrow spiral staircase, and this level also boasts a rooftop garden with various terraces and a swimming pool. Guests can enjoy beautiful views of the city and the lagoon with the nearby islands.

The common room on the ground floor features a long communal table, where guests are treated to local delicacies and freshly baked cakes for breakfast.
